Our School Room display is temporarily closed, but for a very good reason. The entire room is being restored, including floors, walls, and windows. Next year, we will be installing a plexiglass door so you can get a sneak peek of what the restoration process looks like.
The School Room
Enter the School Room, where sunlight filters through tall windows, illuminating rows of vintage desks. Imagine the days when the room was filled with 1st and 2nd grade students, learning to write and do math on pieces of slate. At one point, each room on the first-floor hallway hosted two grades, and the high schoolers attended classes upstairs. Remanents of the kids’ school days still mark the building - often literally, where names were carved into walls of storage closets and staircases.
The School Room isn't just a glimpse into school days at the Courthouse, it's a window into the history of education in Chaffee County. Picture bustling one-room schoolhouses across the valley, echoes of lessons bouncing off simple walls, where students of all ages learned under a single roof. Many of these schoolhouses closed when the classes were gathered together in one building, so it is only fair that their stories are now gathered here as well.
